These are photographs taken between January 8th and February 4th 2005
when I was back in Kosgoda, Sri Lanka to repair and rebuild after the
tsunami. Click on the small images to see a higher resolution version

The tank pit is pumped out (mostly) and ready to have the tanks
reseated. Actually, we later asked why the tanks were in a pit anyway
and it turns out that it was only because the municipal supply wasn't
coming out of the pipe with a great deal of pressure and so it wasn't able
to fill the tanks when they were standing full-height above ground.

 |
Tank #3 back in the pit, with tank #2 on it's way (with outlet pipes
fitted). Later we had to insert non-return valves into the outlets
because of the back-pressure from the water tower...doh!
|
 |
All three tanks back in the ground. We later discovered two problems;
one was that tank #1 had a tiny split near the bottom (probably due to
being bounced through the jungle on the wave) which was only visible
once it was full of water. The second problem was that the tank pit was
continually filling up with water and, as we found out after a rain storm
a week or so later, this would cause the tanks to float like boats and
rise up out of the pit. That forced us to move the tanks back above ground
onto a concrete plinth.

 |
Here we're digging a shallow trench from the pipe leading from the
tube well (shown right at the bottom of the picture) up towards the tanks.

around.

That's me, hot and dirty after also struggling with those tanks!

the tank inlets.

Someone else liked to live in the tank pit too (aside from us).

The electricians we subcontracted to sort out all the various power
problems on-site. Mr. Gamini (left) and his assistant were fantastic;
they'd turn up on time, every day...and wouldn't leave until the job
was done. And they'd do a great job too! Believe me, this is unusual
in Sri Lanka! Full respect to them.
