These are photographs taken between January 8th and February 4th 2005
when I was back in Kosgoda, Sri Lanka to repair and rebuild after the
tsunami. Click on the small images to see a higher resolution version

Life goes on. A lizard among the debris in the village.

A house beside the road that leads to the beach, hit broadside on by the
tsunami.
|
 |
This is all that remains of Kosgoda Junior School, merely 50 metres from
the beach. There are no plans to rebuild this school and the children have
been relocated to Hagalle school (a few kilometres down the main road).
Fortunately the tsunami did not hit on a school day, as at the time the
wave struck the school would have been full of children.

 |
In my account, I talked about a tailor and his two daughters who did not
survive the tsunami. This is their house, which is directly across the
road from the junior school.

Another view of the junior school, taken from the front right (beach behind
the camera).
|
 |
The last part of the road leading to the beach. There used to be a couple
of small family houses where doormats, brooms and other items were made
out of coconut fibre at about the place where the mechanical digger is.
The road bends to the right and used to lead to the turtle hatchery, gift
shop and tourist cafe.
|
 |
This is all that remains of the little tourist restaurant next to the
turtle hatchery. To the right, you can make out what looks like a section
of river. That watery hole is pretty much all that's left of the hatchery.
|
 |
Another view of where the hatchery used to be. There used to be a gift
shop under the clump of trees in the centre-right.
|
 |
Kosgoda beach, in front of the hatchery. This is about where I stood on the
day and saw that the sea had receded 200 metres out.
